UNDERSTANDING THE GUIDELINES
What Massachusetts parents need to know
The 2025 Massachusetts Child Support Guidelines changed how income, parenting time, and add-on expenses interact. Here is a plain-English walkthrough of what actually drives the number.
How Massachusetts child support is calculated
Massachusetts uses an income-shares model
The court combines each parent’s gross weekly income, applies the guideline schedule effective December 1, 2025, and allocates the resulting basic obligation between the parents.
Childcare, health insurance, and dental and vision premiums are added in and divided according to each parent’s share of combined income.
What counts as income
Income is defined broadly. It includes wages, salary, self-employment income, bonuses, commissions, overtime, tips, rental income, investment income, pensions, certain government benefits, and similar regular gains.
Pre-tax deductions for union dues and mandatory retirement contributions can reduce the figure the court uses.
Parenting time and child support
Standard calculations assume one parent has primary custody.
When the non-primary parent has roughly one-third or more overnights, the guidelines apply for a sliding-scale reduction.
At a genuine 50/50 schedule, the court typically runs a cross-guidelines worksheet and orders the difference between the two amounts.
Child support modifications
Existing orders can be revisited.
A modification may be appropriate when there is a material change in circumstances or when a current guidelines calculation differs meaningfully from the existing order.
Job changes, new parenting plans, and shifts in childcare or health insurance costs are common triggers.
When courts deviate from the guidelines
The guideline amount is presumed correctly, but a judge can deviate when applying it would be unjust or inappropriate.
Specific findings must appear on the record.
Common deviation factors include extraordinary medical expenses, special needs of the child, significant disparities between households, and other documented hardships.
Why online calculators have limits
A calculator cannot weigh credibility, evaluate self-employment income, or interpret a Probate and Family Court judge’s preferences.
It will not catch imputed income, deviation arguments, or the full effect of a complex parenting schedule.
Use the estimate as a starting point, not a substitute for advice.
When to speak with a child support lawyer
If your numbers are anything other than two straightforward W-2 incomes and a simple parenting schedule, a brief conversation with a Massachusetts family law attorney is worth it.
The difference between a guideline estimate and a properly argued order can be significant, both monthly and over the life of the case.
